This paper deals with the importance of understanding the scientific terminology and the meta-language used in the discourse of teachers and students in science classes. It relates the results of two studies directed to investigate the degree of understanding by high school and university students of the meaning of words commonly used in classes and text books of Physics. The results of this research allow the presentation of some suggestions to improve the quality of the teaching and learning processes.
