The article presents the build-up and characterization of a photoelectric cell and a system of excitation and measurement for use in physics classes. The cell is similar to those developed earlier in the XIX century and the measurement apparatus consists of transistors, battery and multimeter, which allows to estimate the photoelectric current. Due to the unavailability of commercial photoelectric cells, physics teachers have been hindered to discussing adequately the photoelectric effect. For this purpose, the system shown here provides quite appropriate tool.
