The number of institutions destined to shelter old citizens has been increasing in Brazil since the last decades of the XX century. At the same time, a legal structure has been created to control its activities. This study aims to summarize Brazilian federal legislation, promulgated after 1988 Constitution, concerning elderly rights, especially the assistance in long-term care facilities.
