Multipurpose cadastral systems have been used as an efficient tool to manage territorial information. Its application goes beyond the fiscal purpose, as it used to be in its origins. Multipurpose cadastral system has been used for land management, environmental protection and sustainable development of the land. In a broad context, efficient implementation of a multipurpose cadastral system brings benefits to the government and private sector related to municipal planning, and also directs benefits to citizens such as access improvement to the land information, land appraisal accuracy, and identification of the basic services and so on. This article briefly describes the components of a multipurpose cadastral system, benefits of its implementation and problems of its implementation in Brazil. It also brings some reflections on the Cadastre 3D and Cadastre 4D and discusses some problems of its implementation in Brazil.
