CHIQUIERI, Abner; MAIO, Fernando Régis Di  and  PEIXOTO, Ariane Luna. A distribuição geográfica da família Rubiaceae Juss. na Flora Brasiliensis de Martius. Rodriguésia [online]. 2004, vol.55, n.84, pp.47-57. ISSN 0370-6583.

Flora Brasiliensis, planned and edited mainly by Karl Friederich Philipp von Martius, from 1840 and 1906, deals with all species from Brazilian Flora known at that time. In this work, the Rubiaceae, represented by 99 genus and 1043 species, was taxonomicaly analysed by K. Schumann and Mueller Argoviensis. The geographical distribution study, presented on pages 415 to 422 of volume 6, part 6, was written only by Schumann. Reading and interpretation of this work is very important and sometimes indispensable for Brazilan flora researchers, specially for those dedicated to taxonomy, floristic and fitogeography. The descriptive text on the geographical distribution in Latin and the various changes on generic and specific names raise difficulties for comprehending Schumann’s great vision about the whole Rubiaceae family in Brazilian flora and the presence of this family’s taxa throughout different Brazilian biomes. This paper presents the Portuguese translation of the latin text by Schumann on the geographical distribution of Rubiaceae, and updates scientific names presented there.

Keywords : Rubiaceae; Flora Brasiliensis; Fitogeography; Brazilian Flora.
