In memoriam Carlos Chagas Filho

It is appropriate and fitting that this small tribute to Carlos Chagas Filho, a former President of Academia Brasileira de Ciências, is a multidisciplinary issue of the Anais rather than one dedicated to a single topic. Professor Chagas' love of science knew no boundaries and was not restricted to his particular field of work.
Neuroscientists like to think of Chagas as a colleague not only because of his nurturing role of the first in vitro studies of NGF by Rita Levi-Montalcini and Hertha Meyer, at the Instituto de Biofísica, but also because of his pioneer studies (with Denise Albe-Fessard) of electrophysiology of the electroplaque and of the effects of denervation on this structure. Thus, it is also felicitous that this issue contains the summaries of communications to a session on Themes on Neuroscience.
