Implantation of a gold weight in the prevarsal space

RESUMO

Implantação de um peso de ouro na região pré-tarsal foi realizada em 3 pacientes com lagoftalmo paralítico irreversível. Essa técnica, já antiga (Smellie, 1965), vem ganhando novo interesse através de modificações, como a associação de um pequeno retrocesso da aponeurose do músculo levantador da pálpebra superior (Seiff, 1989).

Nossos 3 pacientes submetidos a esse tratamento cirúrgico apresentaram melhora clínica objetiva e subjetiva. O acompanhamento foi de 4 a 8 meses. Mais casos são necessários para uma avaliação prognóstica definitiva.

SUMMARY

Implantation of a gold weight in the pretarsal space was performed on 3 patients with paralytic lagophthalmos. This old technique (Smellie, 1965) has been showing revived interest through some changes, introduced by Seiff (1989), that induced a limited levator recession.

Our 3 patients submitted to this surgical treatment showed clinical improvement. All of them has been followed up from 4 to 8 months. More cases will be nescessary to reach definite conclusions regarding late prognosis.
