Uveitis associated with juvenile rheumatoid arthritis

RESUMO

Foram estudados 54 pacientes com Artrite Reumatóide Juvenil (ARJ). Manifestações de Iridociclite crônica não granulomatosa foram encontradas em 5 casos, sendo que 2 tiveram complicações graves que levaram a atrofia do olho afetado.

Quatro (80%) destes casos, não apresentavam queixas ou sinais oftalmológicos antes do diagnóstico clínico de ARJ, mas ao serem encaminhadas ao setor de Uveítes, encontramos sinais de comprometimento ocular da doença. Salientamos a importância do diagnóstico precoce das alterações oculares que podem passar desapercebidas e serem responsáveis por complicações graves e irreversíveis.

SUMMARY

We studied 54 patients with Juvenile Rheumatoid Arthritis (JRA).

From these, 5 had nongranulomatous Iridocyclitis and two with serious complications: the atrophy of the eye.

Eighty per cent of the cases (4 cases) did not present any complain or had their ocular disease diagnosed before to be examined at the Ophthalmology Department. We emphasize the importance of early diagnosis. since there is usually no symptoms and the complications may cause blindness.
