Experimental model for dry eye in rabbits

RESUMO

Os autores descrevem modelo experimental de olho seco em coelho, provocado pela remoção das glândulas lacrimais e membrana nictitante de sete animais e/ou pela instilação de atropina 1% nos seus olhos. Utilizam para o diagnóstico de olho seco o teste de Schirmer modificado, as colorações por fluoresceína e rosa Bengala e a medida do tempo de ruptura do filme lacrimal. Dentre eles, a coloração com rosa Bengala mostrou ser o mais sensível, apresentando positividade em 100% dos olhos operados e atropinizados. Relatam ainda que o teste de Schirmer somente se apresentou alterado após a instilação de atropina 1%.

SUMMARY

The authors describe experimental model for dry eye in rabbits, involving surgical removal of the lacrimal glands with nictitant membrane or atropine 1% instilation, or both. The diagnosis of dry eye was made using a modified Schirmer test, fluorescein and rose bengal staining, and the break-up-time. The rose bengal staining test had the best sensitivity in operated, atropinized and combined operated/atropinized eyes. It was also observed that the modified Schirmer test results suggested dry eyes only in atropinized eyes.
