Association between retinopathy of prematurity and intra ventricular hemorrhage in low birth weight and preterm infants

SUMMARY

A total of 71 preterm infants born in 1995 at the São Paulo Hospital were prospectively studied. The analysis of the relation among weight, gestational age, fundus examination and fontanelas ultrasound showed a statistically significant relation between retinopathy of prematurity (RP), low birth weight (796.6 g), small gestational age (28.3 weeks) and intraventricular hemorrhage (HV), suggesting a possible common physiophathological mechanism to RP and HV.
