Macular hole epidemiology

RESUMO

Buraco macular é uma entidade decorrente de várias patologias, podendo apresentar-se de diversas formas, com diferentes prognósticos e tratamentos. Através da análise dos 1030 prontuários de maculopatia do Setor de Retina e Vítreo do Departamento de Oftalmologia UNIFESP/EPM, levantamos todos os casos de buraco de mácula de 1980 a 1995. O buraco macular idiopático foi o mais freqüente, com dezoito pacientes (66,6%), predominando no sexo feminino com média etária de 64 anos e bilateral em cinco casos (18%). Com relação ao buraco macular secundário ao edema macular cistóide, observamos que sete (87,5%) dos pacientes eram do sexo feminino, sendo que facectomia, dois casos (37,5%) e uveíte, um caso (28,6%) foram as causas mais freqüentes. Houve uma predominância do sexo masculino, de três (83,3%) homens, no buraco traumático com uma média de idade de 31,6 anos, assim como, encontrou-se um predomínio do sexo feminino de duas (66,6%) mulheres, nos casos de buraco macular relacionado com a miopia e uma média de idade de 47 anos.

SUMMARY

The macular hole is an entity related to several phy-siopathogenic mechanisms that could be presented with many clinical features and consequently with different prognosis and treatments. We reviewed retrospectively the 1030 records in the Retina Vitreous Section of the UNIFESP/EPM, from 1980 to 1995. The idiopatic macular hole was the most frequent type eigtheen (66.6%) cases, with prepoderance offemales, average age of 64 years and bilaterality in five (18%) patients. In relation to macular hole secondary to cystoid macular edema, seven (87.5%) were females and lens surgery two (37.5%) and uveitis one (28.6%) were the most frequent etiologies. The male group accounted for three (83.3%) in the cases of traumatic hole and the average age was 31.6 years old similarly the female group accounted two (66.6%) in the cases of myopia.
