PERIOD OF SIGNIFICANT TRANSFORMATIONS

Período de transformações significativas

Upon reaching six decades of existence, the “Arquivos de Gastroenterologia”, under the guidance of SciELO, committed to implementing open science practices in four fundamental aspects of scientific communication, aiming to ensure that the high-quality publications indexed there to comply with the most advanced practices in scientific communication11. It is imperative to initially emphasize that this journal is characterized by its ecumenical nature. Its administration is not tied to any specific specialty society or university institution. However, it maintains a close and collaborative relationship with these entities and their members, who work together in various functions, such as authors, consultants, reviewers, and assistant editors.

Some years ago, the “Arquivos” had already adopted the cc-by license for all articles, as well as the maintenance of copyright by the authors. The impartial stance always ensured that the journal remained free from editorial biases and commitments that were not aligned with scientific principles and the dissemination of knowledge. Most of the guidelines mentioned here are part of the policies adopted by journals committed to open science. In contrast, others are part of the project to modernize the editorial structure and transparency policy in the treatment given to submitted articles.

The first change concerns the adoption of the continuous publication model. This practice significantly speeds up the process of publishing an article, eliminating the need to wait for the “completeness” of an issue. Some journals associated with the SciELO portal have already implemented this format, benefiting authors with a reduced waiting time for their work to be accessible on the web of science.

The second innovation is related to preprints, allowing authors to choose to host a preliminary version of their work under review on a specific portal, in this case, the SciELO, just as we accept the submission of articles already available on specific portals.

The third introduced practice refers to the need for the contents underlying the articles to be properly cited, referenced, and made available by the authors.

The fourth change implies that the editors responsible for the evaluation process will be named in the final version of the articles.

The fifth change involves the implementation of article processing fees from january 2024, which will apply only after the final approval of the article. The decision on granting exemptions from payment will be made by the editorial committee, which will evaluate each case based on criteria of origin and lack of funding, as requested by the authors.

The latest update concerns the restructuring of the journal’s editorial board’s organizational chart. Along with the associate editors from the represented societies, new names will be added. However, there will be a limit of three representatives per subspecialty who will be chosen by the ibepege representative, scientific editors, and executive editors.

The journal is currently undergoing a portal restructuring process to make it more dynamic and interactive. The latest communication and dissemination tools will be implemented to enhance article visibility and make it easier to access them.

It’s important to note that change can be stressful, but it’s necessary for continuous improvement and evolution.
