IN MEMORIAM

It is with profound sadness and grief that we communicate the loss of the neurologist Flavio Sadurny de Aloe, which have occurred in 25^th April, 2011, in São Paulo. The Brazilian Academy of Neurology and Brazilian Sleep Society lost one of the most active members. It is quite difficult to describe the physician, the professor and the friend who has contributed so much to the Sleep Medicine education in Brazil. Flavio died when he was 51 years old, at the peak of his brilliant career.

Born in 28th December, 1959, in São Paulo, he graduated in Medicine from the University of São Paulo São Paulo Medical School (FMUSP) in 1985. Since then he joined the Department of Neurology, FMUSP, completing his medical residency in 1990. Next he went to New York, where he was a fellow in Sleep Medicine for two years (1990-1992) at the renowned Montefiore Hospital Medical Center - Albert Einstein College of Medicine, with Dr. Michael Thorpy.

In 1994 he joined the Interdepartmental Center for Sleep Medicine of FMUSP, acting since then as a teacher in Sleep Medicine and Polysomnography for medical residents and fellows in the Neurology and Psyquiatry Department.

Well-educated, competent and serious, he was always available to help his colleagues who wanted to discuss cases with sleep disorders. To his patients he has given his best. He also participated in the creation of the Sleep Department of the Brazilian Academy of Neurology.

Flavio also had numerous friends and colleagues abroad and was very well regarded in the International Sleep Community. His enthusiasm, dedication, work ethic and commitment will always be remembered by all those who knew him professionally and personally.

In his personal life, he was a dedicated Father and son, being always an example for those who worked with him. Together with his family, we share the immense sadness of his loss. The Brazilian Neurology community lost a big name and we have lost a friend and a collaborator, which will always inspire us.
