SUMMARY

The plots of two long term fertilizer experiments with corn were investigated as to their contents of soil organic matter. Those plots had been cropped continuously with corn for over 10 years and the residues (stalks and leaves) produced in each plot were returned to it after having been weighed. In One of the experiments, located on a heavy "massapê" soil that had been cropped for many years before the experiment was laid out, the soil organic matter increased as the quantities of residues were increased, while in the other, on a "terra-roxa-misturada" soil that was previously under grass, no difference in the soil organic matter was observed, although the amounts of residues returned varied from one to about three times.
