Júlio César Medina; Dirceu Ciaramello; Carlos Antônio Menezes Ferraz

In this article are reported the results concerning the utilization of cotton stalks as by-product by the pulp paper industry, as an alternative to their burning according to the present law.
Air-dry stalks of IAC-12, the most cultivated variety in the State of S. Paulo was used. The average production of air-dry stalks was of 2.6 tons per hectare, yielding 35% of unbleached cellulose by the soda process. Sheets made with the raw pulp were analysed according to the standards and the results showed that paper of good quality can be made.
