Soil binding by some forage plants

Francisco Ignácio Pastana; Hélio José Scaranari; Túlio R. Rocha

SUMMARY

Some forage plants are studied in this work regarding their ability to bind the soil surface together by their rooting systems. Also the surface cover given by these plants is evaluated ior soil erosion control purposes, such as rainfall drop impact and grazing mismanagement.

The work so far is being carried on in two different soil types at the Pindorama and Mococa Experiment Stations of the Instituto Agronômico de Campinas.

Yearly samplings are collected from a system of random blocks lay-out as follows: a 50 x 50 cm area is clipped out from each plot for surface cover measurements. The same area is dug 25 cm deep and soil is shoveled into bags and kept there for further sieving to separate it from the roots. So, both roots and leaves and stems have either their weight and volume evaluated in kilograms or cubic centimeters.

A relation by weight or by volume between cover and rooting system is expected to point out the best suited plant for soil binding and coverage. The relation must then be as close to unit value as possible.
