Longevity of nut grass tubers
Antônio Celso Magalhães
SUMMARY
The viability of nut grass tubers, kept under different conditions of relative humidity of air and maintained under flooded soil, was studied.
After 90 days of storing at 70 and 90% of relative humidity the tubers showed poor sprouting, all the viability being lost after 120 days.
Nut grass exhibited a low resistance to desiccation and only became able to sprout after 45 days passed by, when submitted to conditions of 10 and 30% of relative humidity.
Buried in water-soaked soil for 230 days, the tubers still maintained a high percentage of sprouting which indicated their ability to survive even under conditions of poor aeration in the flooded soil.
