SUMMARY
Bean leaves with common and halo blight symptoms were collected in the rainy season of 1965 in Mococa, Botucatui, Pindorama Itapeva, Itararé, Taquarituba and Campinas. They also were collected in the dry season of 1966 in the same localities and in Ataliba Leonel as well.
The presence of Xanthomonas phaseoli was verified in all localities, while X. phaseoli var. fuscans was isolated only from Taquarituba, when the leaves were collected in the rainy season. In the dry season X. phaseoli was again found in all lacalities, while X. phaseoli var. fuscans was isolated only in the material coming from Mococa, Botucatu, Itapeva, Itararé and Taquarituba. Seeds were harvested at Mococa, Botucatu, Pindorama and Ribeirão Preto and brought to Campinas for examination. Those which showed bacterial symptoms (wrinkled surface) were separated and isolations were made. Both X. phaseoliand X. phaseoli var. fuscans were present in the seeds from all localities. It seems that this is the first time X. phaseoli var. fuscans was found inducing diseases in dry beans in the São Paulo state.
