SUMMARY

A wheat (Triticum sativum, L.) disease, named white spike, was observed in many cultures of Southern states of Brazil, from São Paulo to Rio Grande do Sul. It is characterized by spikes with light yellow to whitish color, containing empty grains. Affected plants also exhibit foliar symptoms (chlorotic bands or yellowing), dwarfing and usually they die if affected very early. White spike disease appears randomly distributed in the field, and production of affected plant is often completely lost.

The nature of the causal agent is not established yet; all the transmission tests made so far, failed. However, based on the analogy of the symptoms here described, with those observed in wheat, natural or artificially infected with the rice "hoja blanca" virus, it is suggested that the wheat spike disease would be caused by a member of the "hoja blanca" complex. Some recent light and electron microscopical investigations made seems to support this hypothesis.
