SUMMARY

During 1968-1969, the fungus Macrophomina phaseoli (Maubl.) Ashby (sclerotial form = Rhizoctonia bataticola Taub.) was commonly isolated from cotton seedlings affected by damping off, in several regions of the State of São Paulo.

Comparative pathogenicity tests of different isolates of M. phaseoli, obtained from cotton or bean, were made under greenhouse conditions. The results showed that M. phaseoli isolated from cotton was pathogenic to both bean and cotton; other isolates of this fungus, obtained from bean, were highly pathogenic to bean but to lesser extent, or even non-pathogenic, to cotton.

The symptoms induced by M. phaseoli on cotton under experimental conditions was damping off, while infected bean seedlings exhibited leaf blight or etiolated epicotyl.

It is suggested that bean fields affected by M. phaseoli should not be used for cotton planting immediately after, and vice-versa, to avoid stand reduction.
