SUMMARY

A preliminary study on the time of planting of pigeon pea was made at the Experimental Station in Pindorama — State of São Paulo, during the period 1966/68. Six planting times were compared. Planting in October, November, December and January resulted in flowering iniciating in April. The difference in flowering time among the first, second and third plantings (which refer to October, November and December) was only 6 days, whereas for the fourth, fifth and sixth plantings (January, February and March) the difference was 16, 30 and 78 days, respectively. The time of planting also affected the height of the plant, the tallest plants being obtained when planted in October, with a height of 3.26 meters, and the shortest when planted in March, with 1.11m. Harvesting was done at two periods, July and October of 1968. The yield of the first harvest was bigger than that of the second harvest for all treatments. The best time of planting would be in January because the yields are good, the farmer is not too busy and the plant attains a height of 1,69m, which is ideal for harvesting without the use of step-ladder.
