SUMMARY
An electron microscopic study was made on the tissues of bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) plants, infected with the isolate "Piracicaba" of the bean yellow mosaic virus (BYMV-P). Besides the lamellar inclusions, typical of infection by viruses of the potato virus Y group, and elongated viruslike particles in the cytoplasm, two distinctive features were noticed in these tissues, not observed in those infected with other isolates of BYMV: (a) the presence of membranous inclusions, which in sections appeared as a pile of flattened, large cisternae, usually apposed onto the nuclear envelope, or as large whorled structure. They are similar to membranous structures found associated with the infection with two Brazilian strains of the potato virus Y; (b) hypertrophied mitochondria, 2-4 µm in diameter, in some of the infected cells.
