SUMMARY

Big patches of symptoms of burning of soybean leaves, cultivars Paraná, planted in large commercial scale were observed in the Maracaí County, SP — Brazil. The results of soil analysis, near the plants that with symptoms of burning of leaves, showed low pH, high Al content and low contents of Ca and Mg. The leaf analysis showed high concentrations of Fe and excess of Mn. In plants where there were no leaf symptoms the soil analysis showed higher pH, low quantity of Al, high quantity of Ca and Mg contents while the leaf analysis showed high concentrations of Fe and Mn but not in excess. Although the K content in the soil in both cases was high, excessive concentration of K and Cl were observed in leaves with symptoms. In the case of plants without symptoms there was a antagonistic effect of Ca and Mg on the leaf concentration of K and consequently on Cl. Due to soil acidity, shallow root system were observed in plants with symptoms, and, with the drought of 8-10 days, there was greater absorption, of K and Cl which was responsible for the leaf burn.
