Pediatric emergency^☆

Emergency care is a hallmark of pediatrics.

Acute poisoning, asthma crises, acute manifestations of allergy, sudden neurological alterations, immediate treatment of respiratory failure, and other acute manifestations have always been present in the daily routine of pediatrics practice.

Although pediatric emergency services are always in great demand, pediatric emergency was only approved as a recognized Pediatric Area of Practice (Resolution CFM 2149/2016) in 2015, with the enthusiastic support of the Brazilian Society of Pediatrics (Sociedade Brasileira de Pediatria [SBP]).^1,2 Thus, a request from pediatricians who have worked hard in pediatric emergency for years, without proper recognition, has been met.

To contemplate this area of practice that is so important in pediatric activity, the Jornal de Pediatria has chosen pediatric emergency topics for its 2017 supplement.

Countless are the titles that could comprise this supplement. Without detracting from the others, we were forced, due to limited space, to choose a small group of emergency manifestations that constitute this supplement.

We believe that by doing so, we are providing our readers with topics of high pediatric interest and celebrating the creation of a fundamental area of action in pediatrics.
