Infection of dogs by T. canis has a world-wide distribution and soil contamination by embryonated eggs of this ascarid is the main source of human infection resulting, sometimes, in the occurrence of visceral larva migrans syndrome. The objectives of the present research are: 1. To compare the efficacy of several parasitological techniques for egg recovering in experimentally contaminated soil samples; 2. To determine the presence of T. canis eggs in soil samples monthly collected in nine public places, located at the South Region of São Paulo municipality, between February 2004 and July 2005. The utilization of a sodium dicromate solution (d = 1.40), after treatment of soil samples by a 30% antiformine solution, permitted the best results in T. canis eggs recovering in the samples monthly collected from public places and two peaks of frequency had been found, one in February/May 2004 and the other in April/July 2005, suggesting a common model to recover eggs of this ascarid.
