SUMMARY

Samples of mites taken at Fernando de Noronha Island in September 1987 revealed the occurrence of Tetranychus neocaledonicus André, T. marianae McGregor, Mononychellus tanajoa (Bondar) and Brevipalpus phoenicis (Geijskes) on wild and cultivated plants; the tick Boophilus microplus (Canestrini) from cattle and Caloglyphus berlesei (Michael) from the nest of termites of the family Rhinotermitidae.

Rather high populations of T. neocaledonicus were observed on two wild plants, Ricinus communis and Ipomoea sp.; however, on cultivated plants only small populations were observed. Mites of the two spotted spinder mite complex, Tetranychus urticae Koch/cinnabarinus Boisduval were not found, probably due to the dry period. It is recommended not to introduce any plant parts into the Island other than certified seeds. Although Brevipalpus phoenicis is present in the Island, it was not seen on citrus plants, where it transmits leprosis. Thus, care should be taken not to introduce any citrus plants or parts of it into the Island.

Although equines are common on the Island, none of the two horse ticks, present throughout the mainland, namely Amblyomma cajennense (Fabr.) and Anocentor nitens (Neumann) were observed. Therefore it is very advisable not to bring horses, dogs and other mammals which serve as hosts to these ticks, into the Island.

A few specimens of Caloglyphus berlesei (Michael) were collected from the inside of a termite nest. Kept in the laboratory, a high population of this mite species developed in fragments of the nest. This sudden increase in the mite population might be attributed to the presence of a large number of dead termites in between the fragments, probably serving as food to the mites, or, do the termites excrete an inhibitory factor to the development of these mites inside their nest?
