70 years of APRS: be a part of our history

WORD FROM THE PRESIDENT

Dear colleagues,

The Word from the President is a traditional tool the board of directors of our Society has used to communicate with the readers of Revista de Psiquiatria do Rio Grande do Sul. I am very pleased to write to our dear readers while we close the first year of the 2008/2009 management of the Associação de Psiquiatria do Rio Grande do Sul. Yes, we are going through the process of changing the name of our institution. This will be a long process, and when it really turns into reality we will not use the word "Society" to mention our institution anymore. Indeed, this change is necessary because we need to comply with the legal requirements of the new Brazilian Civil Code, which has been in force since 2003. Therefore, beginning in September 2008, after our new statutes are officially approved and registered, we will become the Associação de Psiquiatria do Rio Grande do Sul (APRS).

The current board of directors was pleased to organize the celebration of the 70th anniversary of APRS, which was held at Associação Leopoldina Juvenil on November 14, 2008. During the event, our employees Silvia Regina Queiroz (20 years serving the institution) and Sandra Maria Schmaedecke (14 years of service) were honored due to the relevant services rendered. The psychiatrist Norma Utinguassu Escosteguy was awarded the prize Participation Member, a fair tribute to her intense and valuable participation in the scientific activities developed by our institution. The psychiatrists Júlio Carlos Pezzi, Carolina Meira Moser and Ramiro Ronchetti received the I Cyro Martins Research Incentive Award. This award is aimed at rewarding the best research projects developed by psychiatrists who are beginning their professional education, and it is a tribute to the 100th birthday of Dr. Cyro Martins, one of the founders of the so-called Society of Neuropsychiatry of Rio Grande do Sul in November, 1938.

Throughout these 70 years, APRS has gone through several and unavoidable transformations. Thanks to the continuous work and effort of real entrepreneurs, and also thanks to the contribution of countless colleagues, it has been possible to build an association that is capable of developing a set of high quality scientific activities. We can surely declare that we have developed a solid identity as a relevant institution for the psychiatry of Rio Grande do Sul. We are affiliated to the Medical Association of Rio Grande do Sul (AMRIGS), the Brazilian Association of Psychiatry (ABP) and the World Psychiatric Association (WPA). It is also worth mentioning the fact that our institution has grown considerably, and we have reached 800 members.

In the beginning of this new year, we are very pleased to announce another reason to celebrate: this excellent Revista de Psiquiatria do Rio Grande do Sul will accomplish 30 years of continuous publication in 2009. This is another achievement of APRS that deserves to be cherished due to the huge difficulties related to the publication of scientific journals in our country.

We are organizing the 9th Meeting of Psychiatry of Rio Grande do Sul (IX Jornada Gaúcha de Psiquiatria), whose official topic is Psychic Suffering: from Normal Standards to Pathology. We count on the members' mobilization and participation in order to build this meeting that will be the great scientific event of APRS in 2009. Having only positive expectations regarding our future achievements, I would like to invite all colleagues to take part in the events organized by our institution next year.

Sincerely,

Fernando Lejderman
