EDITOR'S LETTER

Dearest,

"2008 is a special year for all of us working with horticulture, in general, and vegetable science, in particular. This is the International Potato Year (www.potato2008.org), announced by FAO to draw attention to the potato, the fourth most important food in the world. Our cover in this issue celebrates this important event.

Every New Year brings along novelties. It is not different with us. This year we launched two new processes: the search for an unequivocal visual identity to Horticultura Brasileira and the implementation of the manuscript electronic submission. Concerning the first, we decide to highlight the journal name on the cover, as can be seen already in this issue. The new layout is inspired on that from the time when Horticultura Brasileira appeared. Other changes will follow. In regard of the electronic submission, we already started the evaluation of the available software, looking for the one that will suit better our journal.

At the same time, we are keeping the eyes wide-opened at the ongoing processes, especially the search for the international classification. However, it is crucial to point that the international classification itself is not the target, but consequence of the journal internationalization. This is a one-way road and a challenge that we all have to face. Some steps into this direction were already taken, for instance, the publication in English of papers originally written in Portuguese, with authors' due agreement.

The idiom in which a paper is published is an authors' exclusive and sovereign decision. However, many authors do not know that the publishing idiom does not need to be necessarily the same used to write and submit the manuscript. For further information on that, please refer to "The Publishing Idiom", in the end of the Guidelines for Preparation and Submission of Papers published in this issue.

We take this opportunity to say good bye to Dr. Djalma Rogério Guimarães, our Scientific Editor for several years, who now will enjoy a merited retirement: Dr. Djalma, thank you so much! Your contribution to Horticultura Brasileira was indeed extremely valuable.

See you in the next issue,

The Editorial Board
