EDITOR'S LETTER

Dearest,

Once again Horticultura Brasileira reaches you. As mentioned in the previous issue, 2010 is the International Year of Biodiversity. Thus, we go on devoting our covers to this theme. This turn, we present a very special portrait of the Brazilian biodiversity of medicinal plants. Have a look at the amazing work, worthy noting, carried out by the team of the Data and Sample Base of Aromatic, Medicinal and Toxic Plants of the Federal University of Minas Gerais (DATAPLAMT), here presented by Prof. Maria das Graças Lins Brandão.

I will take this opportunity to answer a couple of questions we are receiving from several collaborators, all of them congratulating Horticultura Brasileira for its new Qualis 1 1 Qualis: set of procedures used by the Coordination of Improvement of Higher Education Personnel (Capes), Ministry of Education, to classify national and foreign scientific journals. ranking (B1). Here we go:

1. To move from rank B1 to the next level, A2, our impact factor should be greater than 0.75;

2. The Impact Factor is the ratio between the number of citations that papers published in a particular journal received by the number of papers published in this same journal. Therefore, Horticultura Brasileira's Impact Factor will rise as the papers published in the journal are more and more cited;

3. Citations from a journal in the same journal do count for the impact factor. In other words, when a paper published in Horticultura Brasileira cites other(s) paper(s) published in Horticultura Brasileira, then this paper is contributing to boost Horticultura Brasileira's Impact Factor;

4. The very best way to improve Horticultura Brasileira's Impact factor is publish relevant work, with wide applicability and of more universal than parochial scope. The Editorial Board is definitely pursuing this goal.

We hope to have met the most frequent doubts.

See you in our next issue,

Paulo Melo, editor-in-chief
