Editor Letter

Dear all,

We come to our last issue of 2014, and with it we close the year dedicated to family farming. In this issue, we go to Northeast of Brazil, where Dr. Maria Aldete Justiniano da Fonseca tells us about the use of genetic resources and the breeding of vegetable crops focused in family farming. Our cover shows a detail of the canvas "Colheita na Alvorada" (Harvest in the Dawn), by Militão dos Santos, a poetic portrait of the rural environment in this Brazilian region. His biography, as with the complete reproduction of "Colheita na Alvorada", appears in our third cover. We acknowledge the artist who freely gave us the right to use his piece.

From 2014 ahead, our last issue will be published in October, rather than in December, as it used to be. With the anticipation of the journal, your work also reaches the public earlier. This achievement was possible due to the diligent, competent and dedicated work of our secretary, executive coordination and editing team.

It is important to place in the spot the decisions taken by the Brazilian Association of Horticulture (ABH) last July, in its General Assembly, in Palmas, Tocantins, during its biennial congress, which directly affect Horticultura Brasileira:

  1. 1.

    Increase on the emphasis given to scientific and technological contribution and novelty of results as criteria for accepting papers in the journal. Our Scientific Editor Jean Carlos Cardoso takes the first step in this direction. Check his Letter to the Editor, published in this issue;

  2. 2.

    Increase the amount of papers published in English to 50%;

  3. 3.

    Suspension of sending print issues for those who so wish, and;

  4. 4.

    Adjustment in the value of ABH annual fee in 2015, which will impact our processing fees (see the updated values in the Publication Guidelines at the end of this issue).

We say goodbye to 2014 greeting all of you who, for another year, helped us to make Horticultura Brasileira.

See you in next volume, next number, and great 2015 to everyone!

Paulo Melo
