José Luiz Meurer

This volume, with papers by guests to the IV ALSFAL Congress, organized by José Luiz Meurer, was already being printed when we heard of his premature death.
Professor at the Federal University of Santa Catarina, coordinator of the Graduate Programme in English, he started his career there immediately after his M.A. in 1976. A Doctor in Linguistics from Georgetown University (1985) he was always an active and respected researcher in several areas of Applied Linguistics, with special contribution to the teaching of English, linguistic analysis in social context, genre, in Systemic Functional Grammar and Critical Discourse Analysis.
An extraordinary teacher, he supervised a large number of M.As. and Doctorates, whose authors are now important or promising researchers in Brazil. His contribution is present in the staff of several universities all over the country.
His many publications will remain as a source of learning and reflection. He was an active member of associations, events and committees.
Personally and on behalf of all participants in this volume and all systemicists on the Continent, on behalf of ALFAL, DELTA and LAEL _ the Applied Linguistics and Language Study Graduate Programme at PUC-SP thank Meurer, Zé Luiz, Zé, as his colleagues and friends addressed him, for his active participation, for generating and supporting ideas and actions, for his friendly, joyful, optimistic and collaborative presence.
