Foreword

Foreword

The Special issue of Vol. 22, 2006 contained articles deriving from presentations at the International Conference on Metaphor in Language and Thought, that took place at PUCSP in 2002. It was created as an international congress inviting participations from foreign countries as well as having its activities run in English for the benefit of all. The growth of the number of Linguists working in the area turned that initiative into a periodical event (every three years) with its second version taking place in Niterói (Rio de Janeiro) in its third version in Fortaleza, (Ceará).

In the four years after the publication of that Special issue (2006) the focus on the study of different types of metaphors increased both in Conceptual Metaphor Theory (CMT) and in a number of theories involved in the analysis of language in use, in different contexts of cultures and situations, therefore also fostering the study of metaphoric uses from a variety of angles. This lead DELTA to accept the challenge of publishing another volume in the area, this time focusing on Metaphor and Cognition.

This special number of DELTA 26 (2010) - Metaphor and Cognition - contains 15 original papers, selected by the organizers of the volume, written by 18 different leading scholars specialized on metaphor, 6 by Europeans and 9 by Brazilians, derived from plenary, round tables or paper presentations in the third Conference.

The volume is also prefaced with a presentation of the theoretical framework that underlies the papers, an overview of the area and an introduction to each paper.

The Editors and the executive committee of DELTA thank the writers of the papers and specially the editors of this issue Paula Lenz Costa Lima (UECE-CE), Ana Cristina Pelosi Silva de Macedo (UFC-CE) and Emilia Maria Peixoto Farias (UFC-CE), for their very good job in the organization, revision and presentation of the issue and all the work involved in the task. The volume is of great interest to the area and, we hope, serves as one more source of inspiration for more work and advance in the area both in Brazil and abroad.
