Special issue for Brazilian Pharmacognosy Lecturers

The idea of publishing a special issue of the Brazilian Journal of Pharmacognosy emerged informally in Porto Alegre in November 2014, during the visit of Professor Cid AM Santos, BJP Editor-in-Chief, and it was envisioned, initially, as an issue containing articles that reflect the current state of research being conducted in Pharmacognosy and natural products in Brazil.

In the meantime, the idea began taking shape and suggestions were exchanged between several lecturers of Pharmacognosy and related areas. Because in many Pharmacy courses part of the Pharmacognosy content has been transferred to other disciplines (such as Pharmacobotany, Phytochemistry, Phytomedicine, Technology and Quality control of drug plants and their derivatives, among others), the consensus was that restricting submissions to Pharmacognosy lecturers would exclude the valuable contribution of the researchers of the above areas.

Thus, lecturers of various fields that include the subject of Pharmacognosy were invited to submit their manuscripts. As a consequence, submissions from all areas were received, showing the multidisciplinary character of Pharmacognosy. In fact, this issue indicates that the Brazilian Journal of Pharmacognosy is a key vehicle for the dissemination of results in these areas. Our journal, today part of Elsevier journals, has broad international visibility, with a crescent impact factor (now IF of 0.832), and could become the main vehicle for Brazilian researchers in natural products. This realizes the ideals of Prof. Fernando de Oliveira, founder of BJP in 1986, of supporting this vehicle and the work being carried out over the years.

We think that this special issue is an effort to disseminate the current advances in Pharmacognosy in Brazil and to stimulate discussion of future research directions in the field. The Editors hope that the ideas and techniques described in this special issue will be viewed as a valuable contribution to the broad field of Pharmacognosy. Also, we look forward to the time when more researchers will take up these challenges and use the Brazilian Journal of Pharmacognosy as a forum for the exchange of their research results and ideas.

We would like to express our sincere gratitude to all the authors for contributing to this special issue, as well as to the many reviewers for helping us in assessing the manuscripts and giving constructive comments to the authors. We would also like to thank the entire staff of the Brazilian Journal of Pharmacognosy for guiding us in a very organized and supportive manner through the editorial process.
