Proceedings of the 10^th Brazilian Workshop on Semiconductor Physics

This special volume of the Brazilian Journal of Physics contains the proceedings of the 10^th Brazilian Workshop on Semiconductor Physics (BWSP-10), held in Guarujá from April 22^nd to 27^th, 2001. Almost two hundred participants came to this event, including 17 invited speakers, 163 participants from Brazilian institutions and 9 from abroad. Over 180 abstracts were submitted, from which 138 were selected for poster presentation, in paralell to the invited talks. The papers presently published, revised and refereed according to the usual standards of the Brazilian Journal of Physics, provide a fair overview of the program of the meeting, covering a variety of topics which are relevant for semiconductor physics at the present moment.

The BWSP-10 reinforced the tradition of this series of biannual meetings, which started almost twenty years ago with the 1^st Brazilian School on Semiconductor Physics, held in Campinas in 1983. The change of the name from "school" to "workshop" occured in 1995, in accordance with a change in format of the event towards a scientific meeting aimed at active researchers in the area. Such change in name and format, and the continuous success of the following meetings, testifies the development of this research area in Brazil, as well as the maturity of the scientific community responsible for this development. It is interesting to see that the program of the BWSP-10 is closely tuned to the programs of other important international conferences on semiconductor physics. It is worth noting that such program is largely defined by the Brazilian researchers when they submit their abstracts.

We thank the invited and contributing authors for preparing their manuscripts, and our colleagues in the Program Committee for their active involvement in the refereeing procedures.
