The present study of cases and controls aimed at evaluating the birth weights of newborns, whose mothers live in the industrial section of Rio Grande county/RS. These mothers are thought to be exposed to environmental pollution. Data collection was performed between April and November of 2003 by means of a questionnaire filled out by these mothers soon after their babies had been born. The sample was made up of 138 cases (newborns with weights below 2,500 grams) and 409 control cases (newborns with weights of 2,500 grams or above). This piece of research was based on the presumption that pregnant women living in the vicinity of the industrial section of Rio Grande county suffer interference in the normal development of their pregnancies, leading to a reduction of birth weight for their children. The data analysis was performed by means of non-conditional logistic regression. A strong tendency for positive association with the mothers' residence in the industrial area was found (p=0,057), which increased risk (OR=4,67) of low birth weight (LBW). Beyond that, the main associations made between the result of the study and other variables taken into account as possible risk factors and/or confusion were previous stillborns (OR=3,23), previous LBW (OR=5,30), hypertension (OR=3,77) and miscarriage threat (OR=6,27). An increase in maternal height (OR=0,43), weight gain (OR=0,08) and increase in the number of pre-natal doctor appointments (OR=0,17) were identified as protection factors. In addition, partner absence (p=0,052), increase in mother age (p=0,052), number of cigarettes smoked a day by the partner (p=0,09), ingestion of alcoholic drinks by the mother (p=0,07) and diabetes present at pregnancy (p=0,08) tend to associate positively with LBW, while the workplace tends to associate negatively (p=0,08). It is believed that this study will help prevent health damage resulting from exposure to environmental pollution in Rio Grande county, as well as contribute to the planning and adoption of public policies aiming at child-mother welfare and sustainable development, preserving the population's health and quality of life.
