45 YEARS OF THE ACADEMIC GRADUATE PROGRAM IN NURSING AT UNIVERSIDADE FEDERAL DE SANTA CATARINA

On January 27th, 1976, through Ordinance No. 28, at Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina (UFSC), the Master's Course in Nursing Science: Area of Concentration (AC) in Adults' Health was born, under coordination of Professor Ingrid Elsen. In 1993, it started to offer the PhD Course in Nursing Philosophy. In 2010, the Post-PhD in Nursing launched. And, in 2021, when celebrating 45 years, the Graduate Program in Nursing (Programa de Pós-Graduação em Enfermagem, PEN) is rated with Concept 6 by the Coordination for the Improvement of Higher Level Personnel (Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior, CAPES), which corresponds to an International Excellence Program, and structured in two areas of concentration - AC: 1) Philosophy and Care in Health and Nursing and 2) Education and Work in Health and Nursing.

In 2026, the PEN will be 50 years old! Therefore, the 45th anniversary celebrations will trigger a sequence of events to be held over the next five years until the celebration of its fiftieth anniversary. During this period, the expressive regional, national and international insertion will be highlighted, which reflected in the consolidation of concept six. By October 2021, 810 Masters, 410 PhD and 80 Post-PhD degrees had been awarded. Likewise, in relation to its international solidarity, the PEN/UFSC has already awarded 40 Masters, 16 PhD and 8 Post-PhD students, totaling 64 foreign professionals.

As part of the 45th anniversary celebrations, in this issue of Revista Texto & Contexto Enfermagem, two articles were specially designed to portray the trajectory of academic excellence at PEN. The first, entitled “Graduate Program in Nursing: 45 years of contributions to the internationalization of Brazilian nursing”11. Pires DEP, Padilha MI, Ramos FRS, Backes VMS, Bruggemann OM. Programa de pós-graduação em enfermagem da UFSC: 45 anos de contribuição para a internacionalização da enfermagem brasileira. Texto Contexto Enferm [Internet]. 2021 [cited 2021 Oct 4];30:e20210102. Available from: https://doi.org/10.1590/1980-265X-TCE-2021-0102
https://doi.org/10.1590/1980-265X-TCE-20...
, brings to light one of the aspects that has permeated the program's activities since its creation: the internationalization of its internal and external actions. For this, the authors provide a description of the internationalization trajectory, substantiating the historical milestones of development of the PEN, thus called: Ground zero, Consolidation Milestone and Excellence Milestone. The second, entitled “Academic Graduate Program in Nursing at UFSC: technological, political, social and economic impacts”22. Prado ML, Vargas MAO, Santos JLG, Erdmann AL, Martini JG. Programa Acadêmico de Pós-graduação em Enfermagem da UFSC: impactos tecnológicos, políticos, sociais e econômicos. Texto Contexto Enferm [Internet]. 2021 [cited 2021 Oct 4];30:e20210103. Available from: https://doi.org/10.1590/1980-265X-TCE-2021-0103

, addresses the different impacts of Graduate Nursing: technological, political, social and economic, analyzing and contextualizing their concepts, assumptions, indicators and adequacy to the field of Nursing and Health considering CAPES assessment guidelines. In addition to that, it presents some of the monitoring strategies for graduates of Nursing Graduate Programs, as important subsidies for the improvement of the management processes of the program itself and of professional training and insertion. In this sense, the planning of graduate nursing programs needs to consider the national and international contexts, economic and social challenges, health indicators and the social and development needs of the Unified Health System (SUS)33. .

In the history of the PEN and with an emphasis on internationalization, it is important to record the development of the Interinstitutional Master's Program with Universidad de Magallanes, Chile. The Course was developed from 2017 to 2019 and was the first International Masters' Degree Course at UFSC. Based on the success of this partnership, the development of an International PhD Course with the same institution is expected44. Martini JG, Elide MAB. .

Currently, the PEN is made up of 38 professors, 30 permanent and 8 collaborators, 60 master's students, 102 PhD students, 7 Post-PhD fellows, 1 administrative technician, 1 from the financial administrative secretariat, 1 scholarship holder, and 1 librarian at Revista Texto & Contexto, totaling an internal PEN collective of 211 individuals. From the planning, execution, funding and articulation with internal and external partners of UFSC, the collective that we qualify here, divides tasks among its members, invites them to participate actively and produces alliances. Therefore, we are the PEN collective, either because we unite in the same interface everything that already represents us, or because in this same interface we need to continue doing. We are not free from the demands of the neoliberal state, contemporary capitalism, financial strangulation or surveillance over our actions. It is not possible to act outside of it, it would be an illusion. However, the task ahead is to produce more possibilities for us to work together in this network of relationships aiming at the development of research in Nursing and Health.

Anyway, these are some of the immeasurable highlights that built and structured a legacy. In addition, it is for this reason that we want to mention the people who made and are part of this legacy. Each person left their special contribution and marked us, provoked us and mobilized us. Given the impossibility of naming each person who represents these 45 years, through the Coordinators and Sub-Coordinators, we thank the entire collective of what we now call PEN.
