Dear Colleague,

I am writing the last Editorial of 2006. Once more I have the pleasure to anticipate the innovations of our Journal for 2007 and would like to thank, from the bottom of my heart, the support received from our subscribers and from Pró-Fono's Editorial Board.

Pró-Fono publishes original articles related to the Speech-Language and Hearing Sciences. The authors are encouraged to submit manuscripts about experimental and descriptive investigations with their methodology carefully described, liable of replication, and also to submit unpublished case studies that contribute to the development of our science. Literature reviews on important subjects, with a theoretical background of excellence, are also encouraged.

In 2007 a new proposal will be adopted in the process of peer reviews. The system of maintaining the anonymity of the authors will be readopted. In 2006, following the model of a few international journals, the system of identifying the authors was used so that conflicts of interest could be clearly identified. This system did not work as expected. The assessment protocol of the manuscripts will also be modified, it will be simplified and more objective. In our new system the double blind review will be adopted, having one reviewer expertise in the field of knowledge and one reviewer a global knowledge on the subject. The international reviewer and the final review of the associate editors will be maintained. We also hope that for the next year the submission and assessment process of the manuscripts will be totally on-line. It is a dream that I am sure will be fulfilled.

This third Number is composed of twelve articles, being eleven research articles and one literature review.

The first article, of Rocha & Befi-Lopes (2006), is about the pragmatic analyses in children with SLI and their controls based on the differentiation of answers for the comprehension of questions. The results indicate that for the research group there was a statistical difference for the less favorable results.

In the article of Miilher & Fernandes (2006) the performance of language therapists - for communicative functions - with patients of the autistic spectrum was analyzed. The results indicate, as expected, that the profile of language therapists differs from the one presented by their patients and that language therapists fill in the communicative space using different functions.

Daenecke et al. (2006) describe the anthropometrical measurements for the height of the upper lip and length the philtrum in children with mixed dentition, correlating these measurements to face typology and dental occlusion. This study implicates in important contributions to the speech-language clinical practice.

Prates & Iório (2006) present a research that has as a theme the acclimatization for hearing aids and speech recognition. Sixteen hearing aid users were assessed with speech tests in four control situations. The objective results indicate a progressive improvement in speech recognition after the first month of fitting.

The study of Farias et al. (2006) relates speech, tonus and oral praxis in preschoolers. The data of 120 children were analyzed and the results did not indicate an even tendency in the possible correlations. There was a correlation between tonus and oral praxis of the tongue and between speech and oral praxis of the tongue.

The sixth manuscript - Matas et al. (2006) - refers to auditory evoked potentials in individuals over 50 years. The results of PEATE, PEAML and P300 indicate the existence of a strong correlation between the increase in age and the quality of the responses of the auditory pathways throughout the brainstem and temporal lobe.

Still in the field of Hearing Science, Ishii et al. (2006) developed a study about ordering and temporal resolution in singers. The performance of the participants was not uniform in both of the used tests. The random gap detection test demonstrated to be less sensitive and the pitch pattern test reflected the number of years of specialized auditory training.

On auditory training, Santos et al. (2006) contribute with the research developed in a group of individuals with mental retardation and their controls who were submitted to ten sessions of this technique in a workshop situation. The research group presented improvements in their auditory abilities.

Wertzner et al. (2006) verified the association between phonologic performance in naming and imitation tests based on the occurrence of phonological processes and severity indexes. Fifty children were investigated and the results indicate an association and agreement between the two tests. This study implies in important contributions resulting from objective testing.

A study about the respiratory dynamics measurements was developed by Fabron et al. (2006) in 106 nasal breathing children. Vital capacity and maximum phonation time were investigated. There was a strong association between the vital capacity and physical development. The results also indicate that the phonation time differentiates the age groups.

A study about bone conduction auditory brainstem responses in 22 adults with normal hearing was developed by Freitas et al. (2006). The results of the research indicate that bone conduction PEATE importantly contributes to the precise diagnosis of the type of hearing loss.

The literature review about the genetic and language findings in the Williams-Beuren Syndrome developed by Rossi et al. (2006) contributes to the better characterization of the neurocognitive and linguistic phenotype, associated to the molecular genetic aspects of the individuals with the syndrome.

Thus, I wish everyone a Merry Christmas and a 2007 full of health, peace and happiness. We hope that we can continue to accomplish our mission of contributing to the development of the Speech-Language and Hearing Science, publishing original scientific studies, with methodological validity and results that can be of interest and modify our practice.

Regards,

Claudia
