Dear Readers,

In this second editorial of 2010 I wish to present a subject that has been the recent focus of discussions in our Field. This subject is about the perspective and development of our future leaders. In an assessment made by ASHA, this new leader should be capable of anticipating new opportunities and should have the ability to solve problems. This new lider should be familiarized with the development of science, technology and innovation.

Are we preparing ourselves here in Brazil for this promising future? Preparing a successor implies in improving our scientific and technological development. One aspect of this future is familiarity with technology. In our country, audiologists are constantly stimulated by technological development. For us, speech-language therapists, there is still a long way to go. For speech-language therapists, with the exception of those who follow imaging and neuroplasticity studies, it is very common to find professionals who are resistant to the introduction of evidence based practice elements in their everyday practice, even more when this involves the introduction of technology and computerized information.

Well, finally, the idea is to make ourselves alert to the possible directions our future may take. Science development will definitely require a professional with a leader spirit, courage, discipline and sufficient methodological preparation to identify the challenges imposed by new research. Our leaders will have to develop new methodologies, will have to identify and change possible limitations, and will have to solve problems, all in a constructive way.
