2019: a year of debates, projects, and gratitude

Dear readers,

We are very pleased to present another issue of História, Ciências, Saúde – Manguinhos. This year marks 25 years of uninterrupted circulation, which is extremely gratifying for the entire team. As we mentioned in a previous letter (Silva, Cueto, 2018), this celebration will serve as an opportunity to meet with editors of history journals in Brazil and abroad in order to discuss the main issues related to scientific publication in this area, especially debates around open access including the topic of open research data, which is increasingly demanded in the pursuit of more transparency and scientific ethics. In the meantime, professionals in history and related areas need clarification on what they understand to be the research data that support their publications in periodicals. In history and other social sciences as well as the humanities it is common practice to detail the historical sources used in articles, along with notations on the respective document collection and archive. How can we improve information about the data while complying with this demand for greater transparency about the “raw materials” we use for our articles? The topic is open to debate, and journals as well as professionals in the area of history must participate and avail themselves of this discussion, calling attention to specific aspects of the way we produce and disseminate knowledge. We also will discuss new forms of academic publication such as continuous publication, preprints, and open opinions, as well as dissemination of content published on blogs and social media.

We also would like to take this opportunity to thank the assistant and section editors who have been with us up to this issue: assistant editors Charles Pessanha, Ildeu de Castro Moreira, Gilberto Hochman, Margarida de Souza Neves, Gabriela Soto Laveaga, Paulo Drinot, the editors of the “Imagens” (Images) section, Ana Maria Mauad and Maria Teresa Bandeira de Mello, the editor of the “Fontes” (Sources) section, Maria Rachel Fróes da Fonseca, and the editor for scientific dissemination, Luísa Massarani. In the next issue, we will announce the new editorial staff that will be responsible for the 2019-2022 period. Assistant editors Karina Ramaciotti, Nelson Sanjad, and Luiz Antonio de Castro Santos, as well as the editor of the “Livros & Redes” (Books & Networks) section, Ana Carolina Vimieiro-Gomes, will remain on the team.

Most of these editors have been part of HCSM’s editorial staff for many years, and made significant contributions so that our journal could become well-established in the academic arena and earn the respect that today makes us so proud. We offer our deepest and most sincere thanks, and look forward to ongoing cooperation with everyone involved.

Enjoy!
