CARTA AO EDITOR

February 11, 2022.

To Marcos Cueto, editor of História, Ciências, Saúde – Manguinhos ( HCSM ),

I want to inform you, the editor of HCSM , as well as the journal’s readers, that I mistakenly cited a source in my article “Hunters, rangers, cougars, and jaguars: human and nonhuman territories at the Argentine-Brazilian border, 1960s-1990s”, published in História, Ciências, Saúde – Manguinhos , v.28, suppl., December 2021. The wrong reference is located on page 73, and it points to the 2015 article by Hiller et al., “Demography, prey abundance, and management affect number of cougar mortalities associated with livestock conflicts.” In my own article ( Freitas, 2021FREITAS, Frederico. Hunters, rangers, cougars, and jaguars: human and nonhuman territories at the Argentine-Brazilian border, 1960s-1990s. História, Ciências, Saúde – Manguinhos, v.28, supl., p.59-79, 2021. Availabe at: http://doi.org/10.1590/S0104-59702021000500004.

), I cite Hiller et al. (2015)HILLER, Tim L. et al. Demography, prey abundance, and management affect number of cougar mortalities associated with livestock conflicts. The Journal of Wildlife Management, v.79, n.6, p.978-988, 2015. Available at: https://doi.org/10.1002/jwmg.913.

to support a point about cougar attacks on human children. However, the article by Hiller et al. does not support that. In fact, the article by Hiller et al. studies the mortalities of cougars resulting from livestock conflict, not cougars attacks on human children. I recognize my error and apologize for any issue this misplaced reference might have caused to Hiller et al., as well as to the readers of HCSM .

Sincerely,
