José Edmundo Pereira

The angels in heaven are singing today, but Brazilian Dermatology is certainly sadder. Victim of a car accident, our colleague José Edmundo Pereira, left us on the third day of January.

José Edmundo was born at Bonito farm, in Coromandel, Minas Gerais. He studied Medicine at the University of Brasilia (UnB) and was a resident in Dermatology at the University Hospital of Brasilia (HUB/UnB). He was a very engaged resident who was extremely interested in acquiring new knowledge. His cheerfulness was one of his remarkable characteristics, which made him very dear to those around him.

In Medicine his greatest passion was Dermatologic surgery. In addition to teaching various courses in Brazil, he traveled to Porto, in Portugal, to refine his surgical techniques under the guidance of Prof. Antonio Picoto. However, the pinnacle of his academic career happened in June of last year, at the XXI Brazilian Conference of Dermatologic Surgery, hosted in Uberlandia (MG), where he presided over that successful event with great dedication and competence.

As the oldest sibling, he was always very helpful to and supportive of his brother Fabio and sister Maria Helena. He was survived by his son Thomaz, daughter Andrea, and wife Lizia - all three an invaluable inheritance from his happiness.

Finally, we are left with the reality of the realization that his stay on earth was too short and that, without a doubt, we will miss him forever. Although his laughter and easy smile will no longer be heard or seen, they will never be erased from our memory or our hearts.

Rest in peace, Zezinho - this was how I warmly called this very special friend - see you someday!

I can say that Edmundo was a fighter for Dermatologic Surgery. He was a founder member of the Brazilian Society of Dermatologic Surgery (BSDS) and he always participated actively in conferences, presenting original work of great relevance. The conference in Uberlandia presided by him was impeccable in all scientific and social aspects. I am sure that Ze Edmundo's laughter and his constant cheerfulness will be greatly missed.

He used to call me "father" because in the beginnings of his presentations, when he was sometimes criticized, I always stood up for him because in his simplicity we could see "art" - and we cannot forget that Medicine is both a Science and an Art.
