The growth of the Anais Brasileiros de Dermatologia: crescimento dos ABD

Another year comes to an end.

Looking back to the year 2010, we are able to see that our journal remains at a fast pace of improvement. We have been continuously receiving an impressive amount of investigation articles, which means that our researchers trust their relevant original works, written under the arduous conditions of scientific medical research in Brazil, to the Anais Brasileiros de Dermatologia (ABD). This certainly makes us very honored and attests to the quality of the journal.

A positive consequence of the increase in the number of articles received is the higher number of pages in each volume. As a result, the six issues published so far this year have added up to about 1,000 pages, a record for the ABD.

To keep up the progress and increase our impact factor, in 2011 we intend to expand the visibility of the largest Brazilian Journal of Dermatology, especially internationally. To this end, the editorial staff, in line with Brazilian authors who constantly excel in national and international publications, decided that, starting January 2011, all the articles, including those written by Brazilian authors, must be submitted entirely in English so that readers worldwide can easily access them. Moreover, by making English the official language of our journal we can extend our pool of international reviewers, thus creating an extremely beneficial and enriching exchange of scientific knowledge.

Even though the final version of the articles is currently translated into English after corrections are made by reviewers and the editorial staff, it is only available online. The Pubmed/Medline database considers official only the language of the print version of the journal, which in our present case is the Portuguese language. This considerably limits the scope of the articles in the scientific world. Another reason for our decision is that we will also prevent potential inadequate translations of technical terms by non-specialist translators. Other national journals have done the same and achieved great success. To ensure the quality of the English language, a dermatologist experienced in the language will review all the articles. This does not mean that the journal will be entirely in English next year, as we still have a large number of articles written in Portuguese for review or that have already been approved for publication. Therefore, we count on your understanding during the transitional phase the ABD will inevitably go through.

Another novelty is that we will have improved audio-visual resources next year, so authors will be able to upload video files to better illustrate their articles if they deem appropriate.

To all the associate members, authors, reviewers (our tireless and indispensable colleagues), editors (forever friends), members of the board and staff of the SBD, and the editorial team (extremely hard workers), a 2011 full of accomplishments and joy.
