Gaucha's orthopedics - 60 years of conquests

The Gaucha's orthopedics is organized since 1939, only 4 years after the foundation of the SBOT in the center of the country. Rio Grande do Sul was one of the first states to put together thoughts aiming the progress and protection of the orthopedy. Since then it maintains same ideas. The several generations that succeed were responsible for countless realizations that enrich our history. There were 23 presidents and dozens of other colleagues directly involved in the destiny of this Society which had three different names. We organized 2 Brazilian Congresses, from 1944 and 1956, during a time when there were not even companies to organize the meeting and when the Congress was mainly scientific. We conquered many national prizes and have in our CV a honorable list of publication of thesis, articles, chapters and books, in the country and abroad. We have collaborated as pioneers to the progress of several sub-specialties, among them arthroscopy, shoulder, knee, bank of bones, etc. To demonstrate that we don't live from our history, our state, trough the indefatigable work of the 7 services of Medical Residence, and without any previous training, had 100% of approval in the examination for the title of Titular Member of SBOT, in the exams from CET-SBOT, in Campinas, last January. This fact is, maybe, unique among states.

The main orthopedic peculiarity from our State is the scientific homogeneity. It is small the variability between the most modest mind and the most expressive "big professor". The community as a whole, profits with that. Surpassed the understandable phase when the personal enlarged egos contributed to make difficult the spread of our advances to the other colleagues of the country, I, today, dare to say that Rio Grande do Sul has much more to contribute to the national orthopedy. The organization of this volume of ACTA is one example - 7 scientific papers were selected, one from each Medical Residence. There was no "protection" and the order of the papers followed the sequence of arrival of them. Democratic and simple! The Journal from SOT - RS, new publication oriented to orthopedists from our State, from Santa Catarina and to opinion leaders from all over the country, translates our new phase. Last but not least, the 700 colleagues from the Gaucho pampas want to say that they will be always arm to arm with their colleagues from all over the country to assure the progress and protection of our orthopedy. As we have done during the last 60 years.

I thank my friend, Prof. Tarcísio Eloy Pessoa Barros Filho, for the invitation and for the opportunity of participating to this excellent publication.

Osvandré Lech

President SOT - RS 2000/2001
