This facsimile talks about the article titled "Aptidões e deveres da Enfermeira de Hygiene Mental" (Aptitudes and Duties of the Nurse of Mental Hygiene), from Doctor Plínio Olinto, published in the Magazine Annaes de Enfermagem in december of 1933. The paper gives great emphasis to the basic attributes of the nurse who acts in the area of Mental Hygiene, classifying them in physicists, moral and intellectuals. Amongst the qualities that this nurse must have are: good character, pleasant physiognomy, gestures and delicate manners, clear perception, capacity of attention and clear setting, easy association of ideas, ready judgments and reasoning, courage, mercy and patience. For the author also it would be important that this professional had "an affectivity well regulated without exaggerate", what meant to say that she would demonstrate weighed feelings, controlled emotions and nothing that could be confused with passion. The nurse must domain the cultured norm of the native language, slight knowledge of arithmetic and of linear drawing, geography, physics, chemistry, natural history and psychology. The performance of the nurse happened in three scopes, which is, in the doctor's office - where the nurse would have to disclose capacity to listen to, therefore this was a visible necessity of the "psychopath"; in the domicile - where the nurse must do the educative activities, making necessary notes about the way the patient lives and to analyze if the coexistence of them are favorable or harmful, the nurse also must administrated the medicine prescribed by the doctor; and finally, in the hospital environment in which the nurse could be the "accompanying of all the moments", managing medicines to the patient, feeding them, giving bath, put them to sleep and "suffering with them if it will be necessary". In this article we can observe that the nurse was an important professional to take care of the psychiatric patient, however for this happen, moral aspects must be bly included besides the control of the feelings, which was equally expected by the woman in that period of time.
