This issue presents the results of studies in a wide range of thematic fields.

Two studies discuss stomatology and dentistry: one compares results of three epidemiological surveys in the same population, but uses different standardizations for dental caries indexes for permanent and deciduous teeth. The other study also compares disease classification systems. It compares ICD-10 with the International Classification of Diseases for Dentistry and Stomatology (ICD-DA), for buco- maxillo-facial trauma and dental emergencies. Along the same lines, another study compares ICD-9 and ICD-10 for "referred" studies in home surveys.

Three studies deal with infectious diseases. One analyzes the relationship between HTLV I/II and the natural history of HTLV I/II-related diseases. A laborious process for constructing knowledge in this field can be observed, including the uncertainties as to prognosis for infected individuals. Another study analyzes temporal trends of the aids epidemic in S. Paulo, by comparing diagnostic criteria in different groups (homosexuals, heterosexuals, intravenous drug users). Finally, there is a study that aims to assess the Tuberculosis Control Program of the State of S. Paulo, based on the database system for cases of tuberculosis seen at a School Health Center.

One study associates physical exercise in adults and the elderly with a higher education level, by means of logistic regression.

In the present issue, we identify a wide range of themes, but a marked monotony in relation to the background of the authors. Due to the essence of the mechanisms for presenting the studies and given the fact they are peer-reviewed, we believe it is due to chance rather than to any trend.
