The Organizing Committee of the V BRAZILIAN CONGRESS OF EPIDEMIOLOGY and the editors of REVISTA BRASILEIRA DE EPIDEMIOLOGIA present the texts of some of the major lectures and presentations of the Round Tables of the Congress in this special number of the journal. To organize this number we invited as Special Editor, Gulnar Azevedo e Silva Mendonça, Coordinator of the Scientific Committee of the Congress and Coordinator of ABRASCO's Epidemiology Committee.

The studies included in this number were also assessed by Revista's Editorial body, even if through a simplified procedure (fast track). The process of choosing the major presenters of the Congress was a long and time-consuming one before the organization, and included the Scientific Committee, ABRASCO's Epidemiology Committee and a large number of the members of the Editorial Committee. After submission, each text was analyzed by the Special Editor and by another "ad hoc" analyst, a frequent, but not permanent member of the Editorial committee. In this manner, the basic principles of quality of the material published was preserved.

As in past ABRASCO congresses, the selection of the lecturers at the Congress followed the criteria of scientific merit, social relevance and regional development identified in the scientific production of the Brazilian and foreign guests.

We will repeat here what was said in the Presentation of the special number of the journal, containing the Summaries of the more than 3,000 studies submitted to the Congress: "The diversity and scope of the themes show that the Collective Health community is alert to and makes its presence felt in a wide-range of problems that currently symbolize the health of our populations. By ranging from aspects related to the teaching of epidemiology, through theoretical, conceptual and methodological and technical issues, the articles discuss equally issues related to current nosological diversity, and take into account different populational groups."
