EDITORIAL

Materials Research - Ibero-american Journal of Materials

Judicious, fair and educative!

This 44th issue of Materials Research contains 18 original articles, and 70 are under review at present. Mat Res. is also published in electronic format at Scielo (www.scielo.br/mr). About 55% of the submitted articles are accepted and published.

The time for publication of accepted articles at Mat. Res. varies from 2 to 12 months. The time for rejection varies from 1 to 6 months. A fast analysis is important for the authors and for the periodical itself because it increases its impact factor. In the previous editorial we posed the following question to our authors, readers and reviewers: how do archival journals manage to analyze articles within one or two months of submission? We tentatively answer that the rate limiting step is the referees response time. Reviewers certainly give more attention and faster replies to articles submitted to highly ranked journals.

Serving as editor-in-chief of Mat. Res. since we published the first number in 1998, I consider that some changes in the editorial team and in the policies are due. In order to keep the continuous evolution and improvement of the journal quality, I would dare to suggest the following actions:

i) To raise the acceptance threshold.

ii) To renovate part of the editorial board.

iii) To focus on strategies to reduce the review time. In this way Mat. Res. will be even more attractive to authors and, as a bonus, its impact factor will most likely increase.

At present Materials Research is indexed by the Science Citation Index-Expanded (SCIE), which includes the Web of Science, ISI Alerting Service and Materials Science Citation Index (MSCI), Chemical Abstracts, World Ceramic Abstracts, International Pool of Glass Abstracts, Scopus and Scielo.

We gratefully acknowledge the Brazilian funding agencies CNPq and CAPES for covering most of the editorial and printing costs of this issue of Mat. Res. The financial support from the Department of Materials Engineering, Federal University of São Carlos (DEMa/UFSCar) for mailing expenses; the Vitreous Materials Laboratory (LaMaV/UFSCar) for fax and telephone expenses are also acknowledged. Associacao Brasileira de Metalurgia, Materiais e Mineração (ABM) and Associação Brasileira de Polímeros (ABPol) cover the editorial assistant's salary. Associação Brasileira de Cerâmica - ABC, ABPol, and ABM have also helped advertising Materials Research and managing its subscriptions and financial resources.
