Calcium oxide as additive on the sugarcane ensilage

Abstracts

This research evaluated the addition of three levels of calcium oxide (0.5, 1.0, and 2.0%) at the sugar cane ensiling. Chemical composition was evaluated during fermentation and after silo opening. Before ensiling, increasing levels of calcium oxide reduced the NDF, ADF, and lignin concentration, and increased hemicellulose and in vitro true dry matter digestible-IVTDMD. At the silo opening, it was observed greater NDF and ADF concentration, compared to values observed before ensiling. The smallest values were observed on the treatments with greater additive application. In this same phase, the highest additive level resulted in the highest IVTDMD. The CP, NDF, ADF, lignin, hemicellulose, and IVTDMD did not present significant changes from the silos opening until the 3rd day of air exposure. The control and 0.5% calcium oxide silage presented significant increase on the NDF concentration from the 3rd to the 6th day of air exposure. Silages treated with 0.5% of calcium oxide increased the NDF concentration from the 6th to the 9th day. Silage treated with 1.0% of calcium oxide changed the composition from the 3rd to the 9th day. Silages with 2.0% of calcium oxide did not change the NDF concentration after silos opening. The IVTDMD and non-structural carbohydrates recovery increased on the silages treated with 2.0% of the additive at the ensiling and on those silages treated with 1.0 and 2.0%, the recovery was greater after the silo opening. Addition of calcium oxide reduced silage NDF concentration in all the phases, and it maintained more stable the NDF values after silo opening.

Nesta mesma fase, quanto maior o nível do aditivo maior a DIVMS.

Born on January 10, 1924, in Rosário de Santa Fé, Argentina, and naturalized Brazilian in 1946, Professor Forattini was the only child of immigrant parents from Italy who arrived in Brazil at the early of the 1930s. He grew up in a family environment in which he spoke in Portuguese to his father, and in French and Italian to his mother. As well as mastering these three languages, he also became fluent in Spanish and English and had a great interest in studying Latin. As a scholar, he advocated that books should be read in the language in which they were written. One of the first books that he had the pleasure of receiving as a gift from his mother, on his twelfth birthday, was a copy of The Divine Comedy, written in archaic Italian.

Because he was the only child of a couple without any family in Brazil, and because of the intellectual training that he received with his parents' encouragement, he became passionate about literature, history, classical music and arts. From a very young age, he would go to concerts at the Municipal Theater of São Paulo on Sundays, and he would listen to classical music every day. In this way, he was able not only to identify the composer, but also the orchestra and soloist. Nonetheless, he also enjoyed other kinds of music, such as jazz, blues and regional music and used to read and write poetry. Therefore, Professor Forattini was very familiar with many works in depth and could describe musical pieces and works of literature, history and art in detail. He was a lover of words and life.

During his secondary school education in the city of São Paulo, he thought about studying history, but with time he entered the University College to sit the university entrance examination for the medical course. Classified in first place, he became a student in the Faculdade de Medicina (School of Medicine) of the Universidade de São Paulo, in 1946.

Just after graduating in medicine in 1949, Professor Forattini was accepted into what was then the Faculdade de Higiene e Saúde Pública (School of Hygiene and Public Health) of the Universidade de São Paulo as an assistant lecturer in the Department of Parasitology and Rural Hygiene. Thus he began his university career. He started conducting studies within medical entomology in 1950, with the researcher John Lane, and subsequently within public health, in 1957. In May 1954, at the age of 30, Professor Forattini was awarded the title of Professor through examination of his thesis on "Algumas observações sobre biologia de flebótomos, em região da Bacia do Rio Paraná (Diptera, Psychodidae), (Brasil)" (Some observations on the biology of phlebotomine sandflies in the region of the Paraná River Basin). Five years later, he obtained the position of Adjunct Professor of the Chair of Applied Parasitology and Rural Hygiene through competition. In 1966, Professor Forattini achieved the position of Chair of Epidemiology, through presenting a thesis under the title "Investigações sobre focus naturais de arbovírus" (Investigations on natural foci of arboviruses), and in 1970 he took up the position of Head of the Department of Epidemiology. At the Department, "he printed the vision of the epidemiologist, beyond or above the specific areas of knowledge" in the words of Professor Maria Lúcia Lebrão, current Head of the Department.

He was Vice-Director (1975-1976) and then Director of the Faculdade de Saúde Pública (1978-1982), Head of the Department of Epidemiology (1970-1986), a member of the Executive Board of the University Hospital in 1980, a member of the Board of Trustees of FUVEST in 1978, a member of the Higher Board of the Fundação de Amparo à Pesquisa do Estado de São Paulo (Research Support Foundation of the State of São Paulo) (1975-1988) and Coordinator of the Núcleo de Pesquisas Taxonômica e Sistemática em Entomologia Médica (Center for Taxonomic and Systematic Research in Medical Entomology) (1990-2004). In addition to this, his participation in the Editorial Committee of the Publishing Division of the Universidade de São Paulo (1983-2004) should be noted, along with his efforts to create and develop the Revista de Saúde Pública, for which he was the Editor (1966-2005). He participated directly in creating the Integrated Library System (SIBI) of the Universidade de São Paulo (1979-1984).

Professor Forattini's life was always guided by challenges and passions. He collaborated with Professor John Lane, the coordinator and conceptualist of the Medical Entomology course, and when it was suspended because of Lane's death, in 1963. He accepted the challenge of keeping the course running in 1970, which was restructured and renamed the Medical-Entomological Epidemiology course, and was coordinated by Professor Forattini until 1983 and thereafter maintained by his colleagues. In addition to this course, Professor Forattini restructured the Discipline of Epidemiology for students in specialization and postgraduate courses in Public Health. Starting in 1980, the new challenge was ecology, a science that at that time was not directed towards public health and medicine, but Professor Forattini was able to see the interrelations between these fields. Thus, he published numerous papers associating insects with distributions of diseases, published the book "Ecologia, Epidemiologia e Sociedade" (Ecology, Epidemiology and Society), and proposed the creation of the postgraduate discipline of "Ecology in Public Health", lectured by him during the 1990s and into the new century, at the end of every Friday afternoon. His classes were frequented by students from a variety of backgrounds, and they included sociologists, lawyers, biologists, doctors and anthropologists, among many others. Large numbers of students listed to his lectures, including some from outside the university.

He was one of the few, and perhaps the only teacher of his era, who caught students' interest in his subjects through his oratory and slides. His classes were brilliant and would promote discussions among the students, which were often heated. O Professor Forattini was a great orator who stimulated and captivated his audience. With great ability, intelligence and knowledge, he would start a class on a specific subject and would then expand the biological approach and come back to conclude the initial point. In fact, his classes and lectures were enchanting voyages through the world of biology, evolution, public health, medicine and arts. With the skills and taste of an artist and the vision of a scientist, he would illustrate his classes and lectures with his photos, taken on a Leica in the city of São Paulo or in the interior of Brazil during field data collection for his research projects. In this way, he collected hundreds of interesting slides and stories.

Many of his specialization and postgraduate students today are active in different areas of medical entomology in Brazil and Latin America, as researchers or university professors. In this way, Professor Forattini has left a legacy of followers who will continue with medical entomology in the neotropical region.

Because of his very productive scientific life, Professor Forattini's contributions towards the development of science have been of enormous importance and have deserved national and international recognition and respect. During the first years of his professional life, he dedicated himself almost entirely to studies on vector insects of interest to public health. Studies on culicoids midges (Culicoides, Ceratopogonidae) came first, and then on phlebotomine sandflies (Phlebotominae, Psychodidae), followed by culicid mosquitoes (Diptera: Culicidae) and triatomine bugs (Triatominae, Reduviidae).

As a truly passionate person about science, Professor Forattini would dedicate long hours to his daily work, writing books and scientific articles, including at weekends and on public holidays. Armed with a pencil, sharpener, manual typewriter, fountain pens and great artistic skill, he wrote and drew the illustrations for his books.

In his studies on Chagas disease, Professor Forattini started to collaborate with the Brazilian Ministry of Health, through the Public Health Campaigns Superintendency and subsequently the National Health Foundation. Thus, the need arose to create what was then known as the Center for Studies of Entomology in Epidemiology, which resulted from the cooperation between the Faculdade de Saúde Pública and the Ministry of Health.

From the time when he began his entomological studies in 1948, Professor Forattini never failed to deposit and care for the specimens collected during his research work. He added thousands of specimens to the Reference Entomological Collection of the Faculdade de Saúde Pública, a collection that was started in 1937 by Professors Paulo C. A. Antunes and John Lane. In this respect, it was the samples of Aedes albopictus deposited in the collection in 1948 that made it possible to identify the first specimens of this taxon encountered in Brazil.

As a consequence of a life dedicated to the production of scientific knowledge, Professor Forattini was honored with many awards. The following deserve to be highlighted: Emílio Ribas Award (Schistosomiasis mansoni in Santos, State of São Paulo, 1947); José Pinto Alves Award (Contribution towards the study of thoracopulmonary actinomycosis, 1948); Florêncio Gomes Award from the São Paulo Academy of Medicine (Neotropical Culicoid Midges (Diptera, Ceratopogonidae, 1955); Important Research Contribution Award from the University of São Paulo (1992); John Belkin Memorial Award from the American Mosquito Control Association, United States (1995); and the Jabuti Award (1996) and the Brazilian Chamber of Books Award (1997) for his book Culicidologia Médica, Vol. 1. He was honored with the Gaspar Vianna Cultural Medal in 1961, for his contribution towards studies relating to tegmental leishmaniasis. In 2005, he received the title of Professor Emeritus of the Faculdade de Saúde Pública da Universidade de São Paulo. He was honored by the Universidade de São Paulo for his dedication to research, teaching and other noteworthy activities for the development of Brazil (2006).

COMMENTS ON HIS SCIENTIFIC BIBLIOGRAPHY

A synthesis with comments on the importance of Professor Forattini's scientific contributions is presented in the following, finishing with a complete listing of his 243 publications and 14 books, which can be consulted at the end of this text.

Professor Forattini's scientific production began in the middle of the 1940s, when he was a fourth-year medical student and joined research groups on tropical medicine in the School of Medicine where he was studying. He published six articles in 1946 and another five in 1947. Among the academic studies he produced during that period, the one he presented in his fifth year to the Chair of Hygiene deserves to be highlighted: "Contribuição ao estudo de esquistossomose mansônica em Santos, Estado de São Paulo" (Contribution towards the study of Schistosomiasis mansoni in Santos, state of São Paulo). From that time onwards, he showed a tendency towards entomological studies.

In 1949 and 1950, he collaborated with the Special Health Service of Araraquara in an epidemiological survey in the region of Ribeirão Preto, State of São Paulo, with the aim of clarifying the mechanism for autochthonous transmission of Schistosomiasis mansoni. Subsequently, he conducted studies in areas of the municipality of Araraquara and neighboring areas that allowed discoveries of the presence of Chagas disease in the municipalities of Araraquara, São Simão and São Carlos.

Professor Forattini began his investigations into tegmental leishmaniasis in the 1950s, and these continued until the 1980s. The research had the aims of discovering new areas of endemicity and consequently carrying out local studies on epidemiological factors. To this end, the studies were concentrated on elucidating transmission-related problems, the existence of natural reservoirs of Leishmania spp, the taxonomy of the Phlebotominae and the ecological characteristics and behavior of vector species of protozoa. Various foci of infection were signaled in the states of São Paulo, Mato Grosso do Sul, Paraná, Amapá and Rondônia. In the case of São Paulo, it is worth noting the finding of a focus in the southern region of the state, which until then had been considered to be free from this endemic disease. In the southern region of Brazil, it was possible to incriminate Psychodopygus intermedia as a likely transmission agent, as well as other species in the Phlebotominae subfamily. In the State of Amapá, evidence suggesting that P. squamiventris was a participant was obtained. At the same time, he indicated the presence of Lutzomyia longipalpis, which is the vector for visceral leishmaniasis in northeastern Brazil, also in the southern region of the State of Mato Grosso do Sul. Pioneering discoveries were made at that time, regarding the possible wild reservoirs for Leishmania. As a result from his research, he constructed an epidemiological model for the transmission of tegmental leishmaniasis and the cycles that the parasites might present in nature.

Following this, in 1953, he began his studies on the biological characteristics of blood-sucking Ceratopogonidae of the genus Culicoides in the field. In this way, it was possible to discover the breeding sites of several species, establish which species were dominant in the São Vicente region and observe the habits of the adults. These were pioneering studies in South America and they contributed towards a better understanding of the epidemiology of the infectious agents carried by these insects. In 1959, he began ecological observations aimed at studying the biological characteristics of the Culicidae and their implications for the epidemiology of the infectious agents carried by mosquitoes.

Professor Forattini dedicated himself intensely to studies on malaria transmission. His investigations contributed towards clarifying the mechanisms for this endemic disease in the State of Amapá. In parallel, he conducted similar studies in the State of São Paulo. Research on the endemic malaria focus in Cananéia was developed with the aim of obtaining useful knowledge for disease eradication campaigns. Consequently, it was observed that the density of Kerteszia species found inside homes presented regional variations, and these were considered to be the result of behavioral changes among these insects. Another important result from these studies was the observation that the flying range of Kerteszia species was greater than had been accepted at that time. His research indicated for the first time the presence in Brazil of Anopheles neivai, an insect of epidemiological importance in certain regions of Colombia. In 1960, Professor Forattini investigated an epidemic of dermatitis caused by Lepidoptera of the genus Hylesia, in the State of Amapá.

Also in the 1960s, he dedicated himself to epidemiological investigations aimed at studying natural foci of arboviruses and the possible transfer of these infectious agents to man and his environment. To this end, in collaboration with foreign colleagues, he published results from a study that showed that the mosquito Psorophora ferox was able to transmit the virus in the laboratory. Among Professor Forattini's studies on insects of medical importance, those on the domestic habits of the mosquito Ae. scapularis showed its possible participation in the transmission of the Rocio virus in areas of the Ribeira Valley, in the State of São Paulo, during an epidemic that occurred at the beginning of the 1970s. His investigations on mosquitoes became even more intense in the second half of the 1970s and continued in the subsequent decades. During these years, he intensively studied aspects of the ecology, epidemiology and systematics of mosquito species in different areas of the Ribeira Valley, which is located in the southeast of the State of São Paulo. With research project funds, he established a field base for studies on insects of epidemiological importance in a municipality in the south of the State of São Paulo. Highlights from this work included the first record of the occurrence of Ae. albopictus in Brazil, studies on the behavior of species within the An. albitarsis complex, in areas of irrigated rice fields, and studies on Kerteszia and Ae. scapularis. Mention should also be made of the investigations on the systematics of mosquitoes, which resulted in descriptions of new species and revision of the Spissipes section of Culex (Melanoconion).

Despite some earlier incursions, it was really at the end of the 1960s that Professor Forattini began his series of studies and publications on the transmission and control of American trypanosomiasis and its vector insects, the triatomine bugs.

Between 1970 and 1984, he studied specimens of triatomine bugs from the whole of Brazil that were the product from the National Triatomine Bug Survey. He published a series of articles that were considered to be pioneering not only because of the novelty of the data but also particularly because of the way of analyzing and presenting the results. His research showed associations between the frequencies of findings of the species and the ecological data on the major Brazilian biomes, such as the cerrado (savanna), caatinga (arid scrub) and Atlantic forest.

Almost always in collaboration with researchers from the State of São Paulo Health Department, Professor Forattini conducted studies and published a series of more than 21 papers named as the "Ecological characteristics of American trypanosomiasis". These were field studies on the behavior of Triatoma infestans, T. sordida, Panstrongylus megistus and Rhodnius neglectus, which are the most important vector species for Chagas disease in the State of São Paulo. From the knowledge acquired in these studies, the Secretaria de Saúde do Estado de São Paulo (State of São Paulo Health Department) went on modifying the measures adopted for controlling this endemic disease. In this respect, the measures ceased to consist of total coverage of insecticide (the "dragnet" phase) and became selective control measures, in accordance with the evidence from the studies. In this way, it was possible to eliminate T. infestans, which was the most important vector species. This result served as a model for the Chagas disease control proposals of the Federal Government and subsequently those in the countries of the Southern Cone. Professor Forattini's article on the biogeography, origin and distribution of the domestication of triatomine bugs in Brazil was of great importance for understanding the distribution pattern of T. infestans in South America.

Professor Forattini dedicated himself most intensely to studies on the ecological and behavioral characteristics of mosquitoes and on the systematics of two genera of great epidemiological importance, Anopheles and Culex, beginning in the 1990s. His ecological studies on the culicid mosquitoes from different areas of the ecosystem of the Atlantic forest showed the usefulness of these insects for evaluating the degree of alteration of the natural environment as a result of the processes involved in human occupation of the land.

The 2000s were notable for studies directed towards synanthropic mosquitoes, particularly Ae. albopictus. The indication that bromeliads act as breeding sites for Ae. albopictus and Ae. aegypti promoted the inclusion of these plants among the receptacles subjected to entomological surveillance.

With the knowledge acquired through his fieldwork and laboratory investigations, Professor Forattini wrote books as the sole author that are considered to be classics within medical entomology. In view of these research activities and his activities as a teacher within the Medical-Entomological Epidemiology course, he prepared his work on Medical Entomology in four volumes. The first volume was on Anophelinae and malaria; the second dealt with Culex, Aedes and Psorophora; the third was on the genera Haemagogus, Mansonia, Coquillettidia and Culiseta, the Sabethini tribe, arboviruses and Bancroftian filariasis; and the fourth was on the Phlebotominae subfamily, leishmaniasis and bartonelosis.

Professor Forattini wrote the first book on epidemiology in the Portuguese language, with the title "Epidemiologia Geral" (General Epidemiology), which was first published in 1976, with a second edition in 1996.

Because of his teaching subject "Ecology in Public Health", he wrote a book with the title "Ecologia, Epidemiologia e Sociedade" (Ecology, Epidemiology and Society), which had a large impact on present-day approaches towards public health. Its first edition was published in 1992, with a second edition in 2003.

He completed his collection of books with the publication in 2004, of a book with the title "Conceitos Básicos em Epidemiologia Molecular" (Basic Concepts of Molecular Epidemiology).

Professor Forattini's research activities did not hinder him from producing a book outside of his field of studies. In his book "O Ser e Ser Humano" (To Be and To Be Human)", he put forward his thoughts on the human being.

***

After taking compulsory retirement in 1994, he remained at the Faculdade de Saúde Pública until the beginning of 2004, when he had to withdraw from his activities for health reasons. He dedicated 55 years of his life to the Faculdade de Saúde Pública, to the Universidade de São Paulo and to Science.

Those who had the pleasure of being in Professor Forattini's company will always remember a phrase that he used to say at difficult moments in life:

Nothing withstands work!
