The variety of materials under discussion

The area of materials allows an extensive discussion of applications in different sectors. Due to the multiple types and variations of materials, their use in the society also involves several professional activities. The present edition of the Material Journal well exemplifies this fact. The articles herein published discuss innovations in steel, concrete, wood, semiconductor, thermoplastic polymer, advanced ceramics, vitreous ceramics, biovitreous, discussing applications in the oil industry, that of civil construction, microelectronics, as well as in the mechanical, shoes, aerospace and biomedical industries. In addition to that, attention is called to the use of techniques of gold foil and leaf gilding on pieces and sites of patrimonial and artistic value. This extended spectrum of developments of materials clearly shows two characteristics of this area, its potentiality and its enormous complexity.
