Sub-Editors

During the period in which the Materia Symposium 2016 was held, a meeting of the journal Materia’s Editorial Board was also held with the physical presence of several of its members. This had very positive consequences to the activities of the journal. One of them was the continuous publication of papers that has already been described before [1[1] MIRANDA, P.E.V., “Continuous Publication”, Matéria, v. 22, v. 1, 2017. DOI: (10.1590/S1517-707620170001.0241)

], which has increased the publication speed. Another one, herein treated, is the introduction of Sub-Editors to act in specific areas of interest of the journal. Up to then, the journal possessed an Editorial Board composed of professionals from different professional fields of the Area of Materials and also counted with the additional work done by many other researchers to accomplish the laborious paper peer reviewing process. The journal’s Editorial Board was then renewed and, especially, 7 new editorial activities guided by Sub-Editors were created in the following specific areas:

  1. Biomaterials

  2. Composites, Fibers and Polymers

  3. Films

  4. Advanced Ceramic Materials

  5. Materials for Civil Construction

  6. Metals

  7. Surfaces

Each of these editorial areas gathers professionals that are specialized in specific themes, who work actively in the evaluation process of the articles submitted for publication, on its peer reviewing and on the acceptation decision, jointly with the journal’s Editor-in-Chief. This has contributed to a better specialization of the reviewing and evaluation work, to a better-published content and to speed-up the whole process. The Sub-Editors are called upon the following activities:

  • To suggest reviewers for the peer reviewing process of papers from their areas, considering active researchers, with complete formation and specialized in the area;

  • To follow the paper reviewing process, giving their opinion on acceptation or not for publication and aiding to search solution to conflicting cases among evaluations made by different reviewers;

  • Eventually, to write editorials in the format of small papers with content of up to three pages for publication in the journal;

  • To work on the edition of a special number from their area, with about 30 papers, being one of them an anchor-type review papers;

From the moment the subdivision of activities in specialized areas was implanted, the author that submits a new paper for publication to the journal Materia is already able to select the most appropriate topic considering its own content, which facilitates the whole peer reviewing and editing processes that contributes to speed up the publication.
